What are SAFE-U notifications?
SAFE-U is the University of Minnesota's mass notification system. There are two types of notifications: Safe-U Emergency notifications are for an immediate threat or imminent danger, and Safe-U Advisories are for awareness when there is no immediate threat or danger.
When will the University send me emergency messages using SAFE-U?
Safe-U Emergency notifications will be sent when there is an emergency situation that requires immediate attention on the part of the community. These will always be sent via email, and may be sent via text or phone depending on your preferences. Safe-U Advisory notifications are for other situations when the campus community should be made aware of a situation, and may include information forwarded from other law enforcement agencies. These advisories will be sent via email and encompass communications previously titled Timely Warning, Neighborhood Advisory or Public Safety Updates.
Does SAFE-U cost anything to use?
The University does not charge you for the SAFE-U Notification service. However, your cell phone carrier may charge you to receive text messages, so check your plan. If you have unlimited text messages, you will not be charged. Standard text messaging rates apply.
Will all cell phone carriers deliver SAFE-U notifications?
The University is using a service provider that works with all major cell phone providers. Text messages will be sent to your carrier for delivery to your phone. The exceptions are Google Voice, TextFree, and other such numbers. List your actual cell phone number instead.
Is the SAFE-U system reliable?
SAFE-U is an extremely reliable emergency text messaging notification system. However, due to carrier restrictions, signal limitations, and other factors, the University cannot guarantee that all phones registered for SAFE-U will promptly receive every message sent.
How else does the University broadcast emergency information?
With a five-campus system as large as the University of Minnesota's, no single method of communication can effectively reach everyone during an emergency. SAFE-U notifications are one of many tools the University uses to distribute emergency information. Other tools include: Tone Alert radios (not in use in Rochester), On-the-ground public safety personnel, Campus-wide email, The University home page, MyU and campus websites, Campus-wide outdoor public address systems, University of Minnesota Facebook page, University of Minnesota Twitter and Digital signs throughout campuses. The University's goal is to communicate emergency information in many different ways to ensure that the most people receive notification as quickly as possible.
Will you send me SAFE-U notifications using multiple methods (cell phone, home phone, email)?
All U of M Twin Cities students, staff, and faculty are automatically enrolled to receive SAFE-U emergency notifications by text, email, and phone call based on their contact information on file with the University. You are encouraged to specify your contact preferences in MyU>Safe-U>Manage Safe-U Alerts. Update your University contact information at the top of the My Info page at the same time, to ensure both locations are current. Even if you have updated preferences in the past, you are encouraged to do so again to ensure you receive these messages in the way(s) you prefer.
Is there an app I can use to receive SAFE-U notifications?
If you also wish to receive updates via app, download the Safe-U Notifications app and enter UMNSAFE-U to sign in with your Internet ID and ensure you receive these messages.

How do I update my contact preferences?
All U of M Twin Cities students, staff, and faculty are automatically enrolled to receive SAFE-U emergency notifications by text, email, and phone calls based on their contact information on file with the University. You are encouraged to specify your contact preferences and update your contact information in MyU>Safe-U Alerts>Manage Safe-U Alerts. Even if you have updated preferences in the past, please do so again to ensure you receive these messages in the way(s) you prefer. If you make changes at the SAFE-U Alerts site, these changes WILL NOT be automatically made on the MyU My Info tab. Please make these changes on the MyU My Info tab so the change is reflected in your official record.
How do I remove myself from getting SAFE-U Notifications?
You may remove any contact method from the Safe-U system - except for your umn.edu email address - by going to MyU>Safe-U>Manage Safe-U Alerts. Federal law requires University to notify members of the campus community about these types of situations as a condition of the Clery Act. As the primary method of University communication, a user’s umn.edu email address cannot be removed from the system’s preferences.
How can I add numbers or email addresses to my SAFE-U Notifications account?
You may add or change phone numbers, email addresses, and your campus by going to MyU>Safe-U>Manage Safe-U Alerts. Your U of M email address, however, cannot be changed, because this is the address of record for University communications. System campuses will not see the campus identifier in their email address (e.g. d.umn.edu) but alerts will still be received at their U of M email address displayed on the site. Use any of the available fields to add other contact phone numbers/email addresses or to add others to also receive emergency alerts.
Can I receive SAFE-U Notifications from more than one campus?
Yes, you can receive SAFE-U Alerts for more than one campus. SAFE-U Alerts is in use on all five campuses of the U of M and messages are campus-specific. You are automatically registered to receive messages from the campus where you are primarily affiliated. If you have a need to receive messages from additional campuses, you can go to the SAFE-U Alerts site and select the additional campus. The link to the SAFE-U Alerts site is located on the MyU My Info tab or you can click on the SAFE-U link below.
How can I add my parents, spouse or others to receive SAFE-U Notifications??
Parents, spouses or other interested parties may download the SAFE-U Notifications app from Everbridge to receive safety notifications from the University. When they have downloaded the app they can enter the keyword UMNSAFEU (case sensitive) to subscribe to alerts in the app.
If I make changes in SAFE-U will my information also be changed on the MyU My Info tab?
No, if you make changes at the SAFE-U Alerts site, these changes WILL NOT be automatically made on the MyU My Info tab. You will also need to make these changes on the MyU My Info tab if you also want the change to be reflected in your official record.
Will my emergency contacts listed on the MyU > My Info tab be alerted of emergencies?
No, your emergency contacts that are listed in MyU > My Info tab will not be automatically alerted of emergencies by SAFE-U. Interested parties who are not affiliated directly with the University may download the Everbridge app to receive safety notifications.
