Parking and Transportation Services
The Twin Cities campus is the third largest traffic generator in Minnesota, with nearly 80,000 people arriving on campus each day. The department of Parking and Transportation Services encourages safe and convenient access to the University and around campus, while encouraging alternative modes of transportation to reduce traffic congestion and improve the environment.
U-Pass and Metropass are the largest transportation initiatives ever offered at the University of Minnesota. U-Pass (for students) and Metropass (for staff) are deeply discounted bus passes that provide unlimited access to public transit. Since its inception, the program has increased transit ridership by 114 percent, reducing more than 50,000 vehicle miles and saving more than 2,000 gallons of gasoline daily and eliminating more than 220 tons of carbon monoxide and 4,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the air annually.
The University has an intercampus bus system to transport students, employees, and guests from parking lots to various campus locations. The system further reduces traffic congestion and emissions on campus and allows for seamless transportation without the need for single occupancy vehicles. The Campus Shuttle Service is free at all stops and uses a color-coded bus stop mapping system. Every bus on the Campus Shuttle Service is accessible to patrons with disabilities.
