UMM Renewable Energy Research and Demonstration Center
The University of Minnesota Renewable Energy Research and Demonstration Center at Morris is a community scale, research and demonstration center focusing on wind, biomass (fibrous plant material), biofuels (vegetable oil, ethanol, and various derivatives), methane digestion, hydrogen generation and the use of fuel cells. Rural and agricultural resources such as these provide an opportunity to develop renewable energy systems that diversify the nation’s energy portfolio, enhance economic prospects for rural areas, and provide the environmental promise of clear air, clean water, and ultimately an improved quality of life.
This research and demonstration center is focused on two primary objectives: 1) to provide a model for rural communities and agricultural producers to integrate renewable energy systems into their economies, and 2) to establish systems research that provides information to stimulate the renewable energy industry.
This project is an important part of the University of Minnesota Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Environment (IREE). The project integrates science and technology to produce information about renewable energy production and use, including important environmental and economic questions and holds great promise for rural economies and the environment.
