Large Lakes Obervatory
The observatory’s mission is to conduct basic research on Lake Superior and other large lakes worldwide; investigate the impact on their ecosystems of physical, chemical, geological, and biological processes; and use research to develop sound public policy for protecting these fresh water resources. Faculty, staff, and students conduct research on Lake Superior using advanced scientific instrumentation on the UMD-owned and operated research vessel, the Blue Heron.
