Green Lands, Blue Waters
The evolution of sustainable agriculture is of utmost importance to the industry’s future, and one University of Minnesota-sponsored program is advocating sustainable practices in an uncommon way: by the use of perennials. Green Lands, Blue Waters (GLBW), a program with many cooperating organizations
throughout the Mississippi River Basin, promotes the many advantages of using perennials and other continuous living cover in agriculture, such as the restoration of wildlife habitat, the improvement of water quality, and the reduction of flooding. In collaboration with the University’s Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, GLBW attempts to bring these issues to the attention of farmers and agriculturally-oriented organizations throughout the Mississippi
basin, meanwhile targeting land that will have the most environmental impact and strengthening marketing strategies, among many other projects.
