  • As vice president for University Services, Pam Wheelock is the chief operations officer for the University and is responsible for creating and sustaining a physical environment and service culture that supports and advances the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the University of Minnesota system.

    VP Wheelock's career has spanned both the public and private sector, and she has a remarkable track record of success leading large and complex organizations. Whether serving as Minnesota’s Finance Commissioner under Governor Jesse Ventura, or as deputy Mayor of St. Paul, or in senior leadership roles with Minnesota Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the Minnesota Wild, Vice President Wheelock considers communication as a key to success.

The University of Minnesota Building Access Program will expand again on Monday, June 2 when 23 more buildings on the East Bank are brought online. These buildings are located east of Church Street and north of Washington Avenue.

Building Access Pilot Program

On Monday, February 3, the University of Minnesota will kick-off a Building Access Pilot Program in selected buildings on the West Bank. The Pilot Program will tighten building hours and increase security in the evenings and on the weekends, and will provide us with feedback and information on how to successfully implement access control in buildings across the campus.

The safety of students, faculty and staff is the highest priority at the University of Minnesota. A steadfast commitment to safety has led to a 43 percent decrease in on-campus crime between 2002-2012. However, this fall semester has seen a concerning rise in the number of crimes on- and off-campus, and in the increasingly brazen nature of the criminals.

A busy week ahead

Next week will be a busy one on campus.

Residence Hall Move-In for first year students starts on Monday and Welcome Week activities will get rolling later in the week. The Labor Day weekend will get an early start as the Gophers open their 2013 season at TCF Bank Stadium on Thursday evening against UNLV.

LRT systems testing is underway

Earlier today, a railcar mover pulled a light-rail vehicle through campus as part of systems testing on the Green Line Light Rail Transit line. The vehicles moved at walking speed from the West Bank Station to the Stadium Village station, and then returned to the West Bank. The test was relatively uneventful and was complete by early afternoon.

Bonding Bill fails to pass legislature

It’s disappointing that the Minnesota Legislature couldn’t come to an agreement on a state-wide bonding bill. While odd-year sessions historically haven’t included large bonding bills, legislators have often approved modest odd-year bonding bills.

A Minnesota Daily reporter called today asking about the University’s process and procedures to close in the event of bad weather. I think the reporter was hoping for a simple answer like “when the wind chill drops to -40, the U is closed.”
